How Well Can Cosmological Parameters Be Estimated from CMB Observations?

چکیده
The CMB anisotropy depends sensitively upon the slope and amplitude of primordial density and gravitational wave fluctuations, the baryon density, the Hubble constant, the cosmological constant, the ionization history, etc. We report on recent work showing how well multi-scale measurements of the anisotropy power spectrum can resolve these factors. We identify a hypersurface in cosmic parameter space that can be accurately localized by observations, but along which the likelihood will hardly vary. Other cosmic observations will be needed to break this degeneracy. For questions, contact author Paul J. Steinhardt, University of Pennsylvania [[email protected]] (215-898-5949) 6 FIGURES, no tables

A Blind Estimation of the Power Spectrum of Cmb Anisotropy from Wmap
The angular power spectrum of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) radiation has proved to be an excellent observation to measure different cosmological parameters. In order to extract cosmological parameters precisely we need to remove foreground contamination as well as detector noise bias. In this paper we present a framework to extract CMB angular power spectrum from the multi-frequency observ...
متن کاملCosmic Confusion: Degeneracies among Cosmological Parameters Derived from Measurements of Microwave Background Anisotropies
In the near future, observations of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies will provide accurate determinations of many fundamental cosmological parameters. In this paper, we analyse degeneracies among cosmological parameters to illustrate some of the limitations inherent in CMB parameter estimation. For simplicity, throughout our analysis we assume a cold dark matter universe with ...
متن کاملCosmological-parameter determination with microwave background maps.
The angular power spectrum of the cosmic microwave background ~CMB! contains information on virtually all cosmological parameters of interest, including the geometry of the Universe (V), the baryon density, the Hubble constant (h), the cosmological constant (L), the number of light neutrinos, the ionization history, and the amplitudes and spectral indices of the primordial scalar and tensor per...
متن کاملCosmological Inflation: Theory and Observations
In this article we review the theory of cosmological inflation with a particular focus on the beautiful connection it provides between the physics of the very small and observations of the very large. We explain how quantum mechanical fluctuations during the inflationary era become macroscopic density fluctuations which leave distinct imprints in the cosmic microwave background (CMB). We descri...
متن کامل2 Cosmological Parameters from CMB measurements with the CBI
We derive cosmological parameters from the CBI measurements of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) angular power spectrum. Our results provide an independent confirmation of the standard Ωtot = 1 ΛCDM model within the adiabatic, inflationary paradigm. Above ℓ = 2000 the observations show evidence of power in excess of that expected in the standard models. We use hydrodynamical simulations to ...
